I Hear Something Under My Floor. Can Wildlife Live in a Crawl Space?
Absolutely.
Not every wildlife problem starts at the roof.
We also get calls from homeowners hearing movement underneath them, seeing animals disappear near the foundation or noticing activity around crawl space vents.
Chipmunks are one possibility.
Raccoons can also use lower areas of a structure.
Other wildlife can take advantage of damaged vents, gaps around crawl space doors or openings near the foundation.
“But I only see them outside”
That is good.
We would like to keep it that way.
Seeing a chipmunk running around your landscaping does not automatically mean you have a wildlife problem inside the house.
Seeing that same chipmunk repeatedly disappear through an opening beside your foundation is a little different.
Things that make us pay closer attention include:
Repeated activity at the same opening.
Scratching underneath the floor.
Damaged crawl space vents.
Visible gaps.
Droppings or nesting material.
Sounds coming from inside the crawl space.
Do not seal an active opening without checking it
Same rule as the attic.
If something is currently using the space, we want to know what it is and whether anything is still inside before permanently closing access.
Especially if babies are a possibility.
